A Window in Time takes the concept of multi-disciplinary, cross-curricular learning to new heights. At the beginning of the school year, eighth-grade students from Agnon School in Beachwood, Ohio, select an artist or time period that interests them; this becomes the impetus for a year-long study that integrates literally all subject areas. In addition to in-class presentations, each student builds a Web site, using pictures, graphics, and text to chronicle his or her project. The experience provides students with an appreciation of history as a complex Web of cause-and-effect relationships, rather than as a series of isolated events. There is strong evidence in this project that students are self-directed learners through effective use of technology. The project's Web site includes assignment sheets, evaluation rubrics, and other resources to help other teachers replicate the project.
