Schools on the Rim

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to peer over the rim of a volcano as it belches smoke and spews molten lava? Surrounding the Pacific Rim is the "Ring of Fire", an area of active volcanoes and earthquakes. These geologic forces have shaped the land and the culture of the people living on the rim. Participants in Schools on the Rim use digital video, photographs, and text to create virtual geologic and cultural tours of the area in which they're located. Visitors begin each tour by clicking a point on an interactive image map of the Pacific Rim, taking them to the local school's Web site. The project continues to attract participants from Japan, the Philippines, Malaysia, Hawaii, Thailand, and elsewhere, making it a truly international adventure. This project demonstrates that the Internet has become a truly integral part of the classroom.
