The Virtual Foreign Language Classroom: Bridging The Gap-Two Cultures, One World

What would it be like to actually move to and live in a country in which French or Spanish is the native language? Students in upper-level French and Spanish classes at Jackson High School in Masillon, Ohio, have used the Internet to facilitate a virtual living experience in France and in various Spanish-speaking countries. Students make travel arrangements, reserve a hotel, buy a home, shop for furniture and clothing, eat out in restaurants, and visit important landmarks in the cities to which they've moved, all while writing and conversing exclusively in the native language. Two Web sites chronicle the students' adventures: one in French, the other in Spanish. Each includes pictures and descriptions of life in the foreign country, as well as educational resources such as grammar and vocabulary pages and tutorials to aide the students in their explorations. The project demonstrates fresh and innovative approaches to the use of Internet technology engaging students in the process of acquiring language skills.
