Environmental Science From There to Here
9th to 12 grades

Join senior science students from Miramonte High School in Orinda, Calif., on a six-day field trip to Olympic Park Institute in Washington's Olympic National Park. Designed as an authentic field science experience, the trip immerses students in a study of glacial regions, rain forests, coastal mountains, and rocky coastline, under the tutelage of Institute biologists and geologists. Students used digital cameras, video camcorders, and laptop computers to record the results of their investigations, and produced an online field journal. Throughout the course of the project students use telecommunications to collaborate, publish, and interact with peers experts and other audiences. The project's Web site was used not just to capture information, but as a communication forum to bring together participating students, teachers, families, and students who remained at home, enabling them to participate virtually in the experience.
