SOAR-High Earth System Science Distance Learning Collaboration: Exploring a Virtual Learning Science Community (#1422)
9th to 12 grades

Blast off with the members of the SOAR-High project on an Internet-propelled investigation of the Earth as a system. Students in grades 9-12 from Washington, D.C., Orange County, California, and Indianapolis, Indiana used the Internet to engage in a collaborative study of the interactions between the Earth's components in order to understand earth dynamics and global change. Adhering to the scientific method, the formulated a set of questions, developed working hypotheses, designed experiments, compiled and analyzed data, and published their findings on the Web. The result is a stunningly comprehensive site that provides a thorough description of the projects six composite units as well as pictures, portfolios, resources, historical timelines, teacher materials, and profiles of hearing-impaired scientists that served as role models for this extraordinary group of students. This is an original and resourceful project-based application of curricula where students effectively develop and apply newly acquired skills.
