Our Towns is a community-service learning project in which 80 ninth-grade students (60% of whom are considered "special needs" students) from Tamalpais High School in northern California created video documentaries focusing on local problems affecting the five communities (Mill Valley, Marin City, Bolinas, Stinson Beach, and Sausalito/Fort Baker) from which the school draws its students. Working in groups of 15, the students conducted extensive research on the Internet, interviewed residents and community leaders, and suggested solutions to the problem they identified. They captured the results of their project in the form of documentary videos, which they presented to the public. There is strong evidence in the project that students are self-directed learners through effective use of technology. Additionally, students sought a variety of information sources and disciplines in order to solve real world problems.
The project's Web site includes each group's student-designed homepage and documentary video, along with a description of the project and a project timeline.
Our Towns integrates elements of the Geography, Social Studies, and English curricula.
