Snake River Connection
3rd and 8th grades

It may seem paradoxical that students should use man-made electronic technology to forge a deeper connection with and understanding of their natural environment. But that's exactly what has happened at the Swan Valley School in tiny Irwin, Idaho. Students in grades 3-8 have used technology to help them conduct a number of scientific experiments focused on the flora and fauna that inhabit the South Fork of the Snake River and its environs. The project encourages students to draw from a variety of information sources and disciplines in order to solve real world problems. The results are captured on a Web site created by and for the students (with occasional help from their teachers!). Visitors to the site can read descriptions of the experiments and view maps and digital imagery of experiments in progress, as well as PowerPoint slides and original drawings capturing the students' findings. A section for teachers provides tips, activity pages, and related resources.
