The Iditarod Dog Sled Race for Adventures in Learning Through the Internet
5th grade

You don't have to live in Alaska to be interested in the Iditarod (an annual dog-sled race from Anchorage to Nome); and you don't have to travel to Alaska to follow its progress. Just log on to this amazingly comprehensive Web site and experience everything about the race except its bone-chilling cold! Each year, the students and staff at Patrick McGaheran School in Lebanon, New Jersey immerse themselves in every aspect of the Iditarod: assembling imaginary dog teams, clothing, and supplies; mapping strategy; and tracking and graphing the progress of actual racers as they make their way across the frozen tundra. The project encourages students to use a variety of telecommunications to collaborate, publish, and interact with peers, experts and other audiences. In prior years, teachers have actually traveled to Alaska to view the race in person and file email reports on its progress. The site includes photographs, journal entries, weather reports, activity guidelines, links to additional information about the race, and more. Mush!
