Music is a universal language, and there are endless ways to speak it. At the Virtual Museum of Music Inventions, literally hundreds of elementary-school students from every corner of the U.S. have used their imaginations and their knowledge of how sound is produced to invent new musical instruments. Organized by Elizabeth Rexford, who teaches K-6 music in Oak Park, Illinois, the museum has been accepting digital photographs and descriptions of instruments ranging from fanciful to practical, from low-tech to highly sophisticated, since 1997-all constructed of recycled materials. In addition to the exhibits, the site includes a description of how sound is produced, links to other music-related Web sites, student reviews of their fellow students' inventions, and tips to help other teachers initiate a similar project or contribute to this one. This project demonstrates that the Internet is a truly integral part of this classroom.
