Explore Footprints in the Desert, a digital field guide to a variety of life zones in the Arizona desert. Students from two sixth-grade classes in the Phoenix metro area combined classroom research, hands-on field studies, and technology to describe their state's natural environments. They used scientific methods to gather data, recorded samplings of plants and animals in specific areas, created spreadsheets to analyze their field data, and used the Web to submit their findings to their teachers. Footprints in the Desert includes online journals, QuickTime movies, links to additional resources, and materials to help other teachers design similar projects. This project includes strong evidence of students becoming self-directed learners through effective use of technology.
